Jamie’s story
*Some names in this story have been changed.
Jamie* was a PHaMs consumer. He was a father struggling with confidence and living with a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
At the beginning of the PHaMs program the goals Jamie identified with his PHaMs worker were to improve his parenting skills and better connect with his young children.
Through conversations and shared activities, he and his PHaMs worker focused on Jamie’s strengths. Instead of thinking about what he couldn’t do, they considered all of the wonderful things he could do. Using this strengths-based approach helped to improve Jamie’s confidence as a father, fostering a positive environment for his family.
Jamie’s PHaMs worker also connected Jamie's children with the COPMI (Children of Parents with a Mental Illness) program at Wanslea, providing them with valuable support and resources. Simultaneously, his wife received assistance from Carers WA, an organisation supporting family members of individuals with mental health issues.
By the end of the program, Jamie reported feeling more positive about his abilities as a father. This success story highlights the immense value of the PHaMs program in supporting individuals like Jamie to overcome challenges and become better parents.
