Rhiannon’s story
*Some names in this story have been changed.
Bring Back PHaMs spoke to Rhiannon, a former Personal Helper and Mentor, who shared some of her highlights from working in the PHaMs program.
This story speaks to the value of the PHaMs program.
"As a former PHaMs worker, I had the privilege of working with Thea*, an older lady with severe anxiety. Her goal was to leave her home and build up the confidence to go to the local swimming pool"
Rhiannon understood the importance of starting small and moving at Thea’s pace. They ventured out of her home for short periods, first to the local cafe, then to the local shop, gradually expanding her comfort zone.
Week after week, they worked together, ensuring Thea's progress was steady and sustainable.
“Her confidence had increased to the point that she was able to go to the local pool and swim laps without my assistance to get in the pool with her. She reported feeling supported and empowered by the PHaMs program.”
PHaMs’ recovery-oriented approach focussed on people living the life they want, in their own community, empowered to make their own choices. Many people are currently missing out on this invaluable support, stand with us to advocate for the return of PHaMs.
